San Francisco’s Golden Gate Bridge Turns 75
Golden Gate Turns 75 on Memorial Day weekend in USA

This coming Sunday (May 27, 2012) marks the 75th anniversary of the opening of the famous Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco on May 27, 1937. The city is planning all kinds of fun events and if you are lucky enough to be in San Francisco at the time you should try to take some of them in.

In addition, among other activities, the Red and White Fleet will offer special cruises on their ferry boats. Ripley’s
Believe It or Not! Museum on the Wharf, close to Pier 39, will showcase a 13-foot model of the Golden Gate Bridge, made of 30,000 toothpicks and glue. The model will be on view at the Hyatt Regency Hotel near the Ferry Building until June 30, 2012. Free and open to the public.
We will not be in San Francisco at that time, but I can imagine the hoopla and it will be great fun. We’ve been to the city many times over the years, and the Golden Gate Bridge is without doubt a focus for all visitors, even repeat ones like us! One of our favorite vantage points is from the Golden Gate National Recreation Area, on the other side of the bridge in the Marin Headlands. We’ll just have to enjoy it vicariously this time!
