Product Review: Sleep Number® AirFit™ Adjustable Pillow

Submitted by Ron Stern, ,

Over the years you have probably seen or heard commercials from the folks at Select Comfort about their mattresses. You know the ones that use air to adjust to the specific amount of firmness you like? Although I have never had one of these, I wondered why they couldn’t do the same thing for a pillow. I have probably gone through a couple dozen pillows over my lifetime, trying to find one that is comfortable and would support my neck which does have some vertebrae issues.

Well, as if reading my mind, the Select Comfort people have designed a pillow that works similar to their mattress. It’s called the Sleep Number® AirFit™ Adjustable Pillow. Here’s how their chief product management and merchandise officer Annie Bloomquist  puts it: “After 25 years of offering personal comfort and adjustability in beds, we’re excited to offer our customers a pillow that is distinctively Sleep Number. It’s a personalized, innovative gift that provides real benefits each and every night.”

The pillow works by adjusting the amount of air you need for your head. There is a dial on one corner that you turn that lets air out and conforms to the exact amount of firmness that you like. I did this the first night and after a few adjustments, found just the right amount of support I needed. I have slept soundly since and haven’t woken up with a stiff neck—something that has been a constant problem over the years. This is quite a clever innovation and like buying a good pair of shoes, a good pillow is a must for me and this one seems to be it.

The pillow comes in three varieties:

CoolFit™ Foam: “Gel technology works withing memor foam to create a cooler, more comfortable sleeping experience. The conforming comfort of memory foam is improved by gel, which adds a layer of support that distributes weight more evenly to ease pressure points.”

Memory Fiber: “Memory Fiber provides improved air circulation to help prevent heat buildup. Memory Fiber continually adjusts to head and neck movement to offer constant support.”

European White Goose Down:  “Resilient down clusters offer exceptionally high loft and improved support for maximum comfort. Hypoallergenic down is free of dust and allergy-causing impurities.”

Sleep Number® Deluxe Travel Pillow

In addition to the AirFit™ Adjustable Pillow, they also make a travel-size pillow called the Sleep Number® Deluxe Travel Pillow. The first thing I liked was that if fit neatly into my roller board carry on (14”x19”x1”). The pillow is constructed of high density memory foam surrounded by a soft down alternative. I took this on a recent trip to Germany and found that it provided excellent molded support for my neck and gave me a good night’s sleep on the entire trip. The pillow is also hypoallergenic for those with allergy issues. I will be taking this pillow on all my subsequent trips.

You can find one of these pillows at a retail Sleep Number store. The  AirFit™ Adjustable Pillow prices start at $189.99 and the Deluxe Travel Pillow retails for $59.99. You can also order online at www.sleepnumber.com or by telephone at (800) 753-3768.
