TraveLetter | March 2005

The internet's premiere online travel e-zine — www.justsaygo.com

“Wandering re-establishes the original harmony which once existed between man
and the universe.”
Anatole France, (Jacques Anatole François Thibault 1844-1924).

Welcome to JustSayGo.com's TraveLetter
Here's a cold blustery March greeting to our JSG TraveLetter friends. February seemed to fly by. Those of us living in the Northeast wish some of this snow would fly by — with or without an airline reservation. As usual the core JSG travel crew is busy finding and visiting new and unusual locations around the globe. If we haven't been to your favorite spot yet, you can bet we're on our way. But, why wait for us? How about writing an 800-word piece on your recent vacation. Tell us what you saw, smelled, tasted, and enjoyed. Managing Editor Carol Sorgen edits the lot and posts most on our web page for everyone to enjoy.

MARCH IN MOTION with DESTINATIONS
Unfamiliar roads, left-sided driving and roundabouts that go round and round are only a few of the obstacles when driving in the Scottish Highlands … beauty and tourism reemerge in Thailand only weeks after the TsunamiChina — it's so much more than just a Great Wall.

Mind the Decoy: And, by all means, Keep Left!
Think it's rough driving in Boston or New York? Navigate through Inverness Scotland with Glen Brewer and his friends as they encounter a "Decoy Roundabout," winding narrow roads and other vehicular difficulties. It's worth the ride when Brewer discovers fortresses, breathtaking landscapes, Mallaig, a highland fishing town, the quiet village of Loch Broom and other Scottish treasures. Get behind the wheel and take the high road with Brewer. More

  After the Tsunami
Instead of canceling a Thailand vacation just weeks after the December tsunami, Diane Edwards packed her bags and, once there, found shops open, pristine beaches, and, unfortunately, hotels unusually quiet due to a lack of tourists. Edwards said she would never know how Thailand looked those first few days after the tsunami. But in a few short weeks the Thai restored the damage and are in the process of rebuilding. Take a look at Thailand through Edwards’ eyes. More

  Cruising the Yangtze River
Phyllis Steinberg shows China's ancient side as well as its newer side — and it's not all along the Great Wall. Steinberg offers a bit of Chinese history and lore, as she takes us through the country's 5000-years of civilization before getting on the Yangtze River Cruise. Beijing, Tiananmen Square, the Forbidden City, and even China's food offerings are all here. More

JSG JUST KEEPS GOING AND GOING... here there and just about everywhere.
Don't miss: Galveston's Treasures … Quiet time in Galway … Croatia's Plitvice National Park. And, JSG's archives are filled with even more travel treasures. They might even help make that fantasy vacation a reality. More

TRAVEL EASE: Screen Talking Translator
Trying to remember foreign language phrases while jetlagged is difficult at best, even more so when attempting to communicate in more than one language. The Lingo PDA-style translator features a touch screen that allows you to access 180,000 words and 18,000 phrases in French, German, Italian, Spanish, Russian, Chinese, Japanese and Korean. The included set of ear buds or built-in speaker provides correct pronunciation as well. Pre-loaded topics cover accommodations, restaurants, sightseeing and much more. It's an excellent tool for any trip. Pros: Easy to use; excellent pronunciation; freedom from bulky phrase books and dictionaries. Cons: Lingo 9 is not a teaching aid, nor a complete translating unit. Be careful asking questions in a foreign language, you might not understand the answer. Price is about $194. Is there something you'd like reviewed? Let us know before buying a new travel item. We'll let you know if it meets JSG's standards.

TRAVEL TIP
You never know when a plane or train will be delayed, causing a late arrival and, inevitably, closed restaurants. Managing Editor Carol Sorgen suggests keeping snacks in your carry-on and regular luggage. Granola bars, raisins, juice boxes, pre-packaged peanut butter crackers, nuts, candy bars are all easily stashed in any suitcase or bag.

WHAT – OR WHERE – IN THE WORLD IS THIS?
Last month we ran asked you to identify this photo. We even offered a prize. Well, we had someone who thought it was a pencil. Another asked if it was a bowl. Nope and nope. Editor-in-chief Ron Stern took a close up of one of the five exhaust pipes on a space shuttle at the John F. Kennedy Space Center in Florida. No winners this month. Email us at newsletter@justsaygo.com.
SO WHAT'S THIS?
