The Achenseebahn terminus on the shores of the Achensee
The railway station at
Jenbach, in the Austrian Tirol, is really three stations. It’s a
mainline station on the line between Munich, Germany and Verona,
Italy. But also, to the south runs the narrow-gauge Zillertalbahn.
This railway is an integral part of the area’s public transport
system, although steam-hauled ‘nostalgia trains’ are often run for
visitors.
To the
north, the steam-hauled Achenseebahn takes visitors up a steep
rack-and-pinion railway to the beautiful lake Achensee, to connect
with a boat for the onward journey.
If you’re ever in the Tirol,
I strongly recommend a ride on one or both of these charming railways.
I promise you won’t be disappointed.
