FOOD FESTIVALS

Story and Photos by Vivienne Mackie

The aroma of pizza or fresh baked bread wafts across the park…the tantalizing smell of barbecuing lamb and steak tickles the nose and stimulates the taste buds…the delicious scent of mango and pineapple evokes memories of a tropical beach holiday. Bratwurst sizzling on a fire as you sip ice-cold beer while waiting for them to cook…a gyros clutched in a paper cone as the tangy yogurt sauce trickles down your arm…kids running around brandishing corn dogs on long sticks…looking at that fried round object and exclaiming, “It’s a…what?”

The answer: “It’s a batter-dipped deep-fried artichoke, ma’am”.

Oh my. It’s Food Festival Time. Around our world there are many varied food festivals, celebrating every imaginable type of food, from plain, to hearty home-style, to location specific, to exotic. Outside, inside, in tents, on fields, in village squares…the locations are as varied as the food.

Food is a great window into a country or culture, so join us on this tasty world tour. Fiesta will spotlight some of these festivals, and over the coming months we hope to add to these.

Some of our writers have visited (and tasted) a couple of the individual festivals, so check out their stories and pictures too. This month Roberta Beach-Jacobson takes us to an Onion Festival in Germany, and Keith Kellett visits the Adelaide Festival in Australia.

Here are a number of food festivals to start you on your food travels (ordered by date).
