Project Swinea
Teltow-Fläming

By Kyra, age 11

4Teltow-Flaeming is a district in Brandenburg that was formed in December 1993 by the merging of several districts. Potzdam is the capital of Brandenburg, the federal state that surrounds, but excludes, Berlin. Teltow-Flaeming is located south of Berlin, the capital of Germany, the worlds leading industrial country.

Ludwigsfelde, a city in Teltow-Flaeming, has been an official town since 1965, although the first settlement was around 1750. Ludwigsfeldes population has boomed, having almost 24, 370 people, although this still is much smaller than Berlin. Ludwigsfelde has many shopping places like Kaufland, video stores, and so many other things you must see. It also has beautiful houses with huge gardens. If you come at the right time it has markets where you can buy so much stuff! Try to look at things carefully so you do not buy any junk. If you are hungry, you can get a curry wurst or a snack. So if it happens you come to Ludwigsfelde on a sunny day just look around and see what you can do.

As the sun shines I can see all the beautiful places covered with flowers, especially Phlanzen Koelle with all its plants and flowers in the parking space. Farther away from the cities, you can see in springtime the yellow fields we call the “yellow ocean”. While walking around, you can watch foxes, deer, hedgehogs, and birds; ducks swim in the lakes and songbirds sing in the early morning.

Pflanzen Koelle, is the best place for all flower and plant lovers. Its huge halls are filled with plants you don’t even know. An extra room is filled with cactuses. They also have little stores where you can eat or buy stuff. Or maybe you want to go to the fish tank to pet or touch the fishes.

Obi and Roller are two huge shopping places that you really might want to visit. Obi is a place where you can buy almost anything like garden stuff, animals, furniture, paints, and whole rooms. They even have a little café there. There is a playground for little children too. Sometimes they even have something like a preschool where people watch the children while the parents are shopping, but not always. Roller might be a little bigger but does not have as much stuff from which to choose. Maybe 80% of it is furniture. The funny thing about it is that Roller is right across the way from Obi, so you don’t have to walk very far.

If you need a place for your children to play but you just want to sit down and have a cup of tea, then Bamboo land is the right place to go. One child for one hour costs you only 3 euro. There are those two huge halls where you can climb around. You can play games, ride on go-karts, slide down the yellow and red slides, bounce on the trampolines, play hockey, go through the dark hall (don’t bump your heads), or celebrate your birthday. If you’re hungry, go to the little café and get a snack. For babies they have an extra section with a tiny slide and a ball pool. If you get board of just walking around, this is the best place for you.

The Bauern Markt is an enjoyable market with a pocket store, honey store, ice cream café, and a little vegetable store. Of course, they also have a place to eat. The good thing about it is it is all brand new. It even has its own parking space and a playground for children. It’s also a place to just sit down, relax and maybe have a drink. Let the sun shine on your back and just forget your worries.

If you happen to go to Ahrensdorf (a town southeast from Ludwigsfelde) in September then you can celebrate the “Town Festival” (“Dorffest in German). They put up huge straw people near the streets. On them, it says the date and time of the festival. There they have play booths, shooting booths, candy stores, carrousels or you can even go bowling. For boys they have kid’s motorcycles. Maybe you want to go jump on a jumpy castle. They also put up a huge stage. You can buy hotdogs, meat, or a snack. At times, there will be a clown, so if you are busy with other things you can leave your child at the clown. Because all this is happening outside, I would suggest you bring a rain jacket. If it is nice and warm, you should get ice cream.

Teltow-Flaeming can be interesting, factual, or fun just to be there. You can enjoy the wonderful nature and fun that is around everywhere if you find the right place.
